We asked our agents how, where and why they do volunteer work in the community. Our Roscoe agent Barbara Fry has shared the story of her journey in becoming a Leader Dog trainer to share with you! Below is an entry in her story first posted here:
Volunteers Among Us – Becoming a Seeing Eye Dog Trainer
Barbara Fry, Broker – Dickerson & Nieman Roscoe
On with the training. Oci is now in obedience classes. It's slow going and he is far ahead of the other dogs in his class. I am going to try to skip a class after this one and move him into a more challenging class.
Leader Dogs sent me a set of MP3s to use for training. There are 15 - 5 minute sets. In these tapes, Oci has to sit in one place and stay there no matter what I do. They start off easy and gradually get harder. He has done wonderful. In some of the tapes, I have to walk away from him, ring the door bell, act like I'm speaking to someone, wait 10 seconds and then come back. He is doing it! So I have decided to take it a step further, and run him through the tapes again in a down position.
We are still working on walking on a leash because he still he needs more practice. He still has to have a training collar for walks. He pulls. Leader Dogs recommends a "soft leader." this is a collar that goes around his nose and then around his neck. The pressure is on his nose and head, not his neck. IT WORKS! I can walk him with 2 fingers instead of having him pull my arm out of the socket. Currently I am using this and his regular collar so he gets the idea that he has to walk nice on any kind of collar. Glad the weather is finally cooperating so I can get outside with him.
Oci now has his training jacket. Almost everyone knows what this jacket is about. It makes taking him out in public places a bit easier. However, Oci is still a puppy and puppies come with issues! Example: I had some errands to run so I decided I could make it a training day. I put Oci's jacket on him and out to the car we went. He didn't want to get into the car. I had to pick him up and put him inside. 5 blocks later I realized why. Oci needed a bathroom break before we started our venture. Soon the car filled with a nasty odor and I realized what had happened. First stop on our list was the bank. Now mind you, it was about 4 degrees that day and the wind was howling. I parked the car and went to the backseat door. The sight I found in the back seat was not one you would want to see before lunch! Oci had paced and walked all through his "little gift" and spread it all over the back seat. (luckily I have a seat cover) He had dragged the leash along the way too. So I got the cleaning kit out, paper towels, plastic bag and bleach spray. I took Oci out of the car and stood on the leash as I began cleaning up the mess. As I said it was very cold out and now I was making the puppy stand on a salt covered parking lot, so I was trying to get the mess cleaned up as fast as I could. I realized there was a heated entryway before actually entering the bank, so I decided to get him and the leash cleaned up while inside. I took him in and began the process. While cleaning his feet, a bank employee walked into the area where I was struggling with a wiggling puppy while trying to keep the mess to a minimum. The bank employee said " you dropped something out of your car in the parking lot." That was not really an important issue for me at the moment, but I thanked him and continued to clean up. Thankfully they had a garbage can right there in the entry. So I went inside the bank and did my banking. I didn't stay long and I was now concerned that Oci smelled bad, so I left as quickly as I could. As I walked out to my car, I saw the "thing" the bank employee was talking about. A piece of Oci's "gift" was laying on the ground under my car! OMG! I could have died of embarrassment right on the spot. Did the employee really need to point it out to me?? that I dropped a turd in his parking lot??? Of course I picked it up, but that was the end of the errands for that day. AND now I walk Oci each time before we get into the car. And if he does not want to get in, I believe him!
