Great news out today.... Ford Motor Company Fund announced that Rockford has been named a Ford Next Generation Learning Community. Rockford is now among 17 communities in the nation to receive this distinction. The distinction celebrates the high school redesign in the Rockford Public Schools, which began with the roll-out of the Academy model in 2010. Now RPS 205 will work toward becoming a Model Community by 2016, so Rockford can host visitors from other communities hoping to start career academies in their schools. RPS 205 celebrates the Ford NGL distinction with its community partners, the Rockford Area Economic Development Council and Alignment Rockford. The vision for the College and Career Academies of Rockford is that every high school student will graduate from RPS 205 ready for college and/or a career. The newest Frank Lloyd Wright museum, The Kenneth & Phyllis Laurent House, will open to the public on Friday, June 6 in Rockford, Illinois. A series of events beginning Wednesday, June 4 will celebrate the opening. The opening coincides with what would have been Wright's 147th birthday on June 8. The home, considered by Wright as one of the 35 best works of his career, is the only building ever designed by the famed architect for a person with a disability. Kenneth Laurent was a disabled, wheel-chair-bound World War II veteran who, at the prompting of his wife, contacted Wright asking him to design a home to meet his unique needs. Wright responded, "Dear Laurent: We are interested but don't guarantee costs. Who knows what they are today - ?" The Laurents commissioned the home in 1948 and lived there from 1952 until early 2012, when the home and all of its original Frank Lloyd Wright-designed furniture was acquired by the Laurent House Foundation and added to the National Register of...
Easter Weekend in Rockford this year includes the arrival of Easter festivities to the area including the Burpee Museum of Natural History and Discovery Center Museum's "Egg Hunt Eggstravaganza" on Saturday from 10a-3p. Highlights for 2014: • 10,000 hidden eggs • Live animals for petting • Fossilized eggs to see and touch All children, ages 2 through 9, are asked to bring their own baskets to hunt for plastic eggs. Egg hunts will be held at 11:00am and 1:00 pm for children ages 9 and younger. Everyone is encouraged to arrive at least 20 minutes before start times as the egg hunts will begin promptly. Many area churches will also have Easter services throughout the weekend including Harvest Bible Chapel's "Easter at the Coronado" Sunday at 10a. This weekend also marks the kickoff of Rockford Speedway's season opener.
