Spring has arrived in the Rockford area and with springtime comes another Rockford pastime – stock car racing at Rockford Speedway.
Rockford Speedway's inaugural season was in 1948 and this year marks their 66th year of operation which makes it Northern Illinois' oldest professional and continuous sports venue. Rockford Speedway has been called "Mid-America's Finest Racetrack" and its' high-banked quarter mile oval is rich in racing tradition.
Most importantly for Rockford-area families, the Speedway is the site of great family fun! Their schedule is packed full of family-oriented racing events including this Saturday's "Tractor Town Kid's Night" featuring tractor rides, Late Models, American Sportsmen, Road Runners, Stop 'N Go plus Allison Legacy and free racing poster to the first 1,000 kids and a candy scramble.
Other upcoming events include the "Loves Park Motorsports 'Loves Their Moms Night" on May 11th and Military Night on May 18th. May 26th the Speedway is host to the Rock Monkey Ruckus features a day of great rock music by Buckcherry, Candlebox, Black Stone Cherry and many more, sponsored by Rockford radio station WXRX-FM.
Rockford Speedway is also host to major racing events like the granddaddy of all short track post season events, the National Short Track Championships. This event over the years helped launch the careers of NASCAR stars including Rusty Wallace, Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth, Mark Martin, Dick Trickle and others.
All racing is sanctioned by the National Association of Stock Car Racing (NASCAR). The Speedway is a quarter-mile, high-banked, asphalt race track with fan-friendly grandstand seating on both sides. The facility has been used for circuses, concerts, car shows, sporting events, swap meets, outdoor sales and numerous community fundraising events.
