When Vickie Krueger, an agent with Dickerson and Nieman Realtors was in school, she loved going on field trips. Recently, she was talking with Patty Bachman, a 4th grade teacher at Barbour Elementary. [caption id="" align="alignright" width="300"] Barbour Language Academy[/caption] Many of these 4th grade students have never been on a field trip and are from very low income families. Most of the school's population receives federally funded free/reduced lunch. Securing the money needed for a bus trip to an educational destination is out of the question for almost all of these families. This conversation planted the thought for Vickie, who brought the discussion back to the Rockford Dickerson & Nieman office. There, some of us talked about our own field trip memories; the fun, the excitement, and the learning that we have carried with us our whole lives. Why couldn't we...

Rockford man gets special delivery from Chicago Cubs

PHOTO/ PHOTO PROVIDED
Former Chicago Cubs outfielder Bob Dernier (second from left) delivered Cubs season tickets to Rockford resident Bill Shannon (middle) earlier this month in a special presentation. Pictured (from left) are Tim Shannon (Bill's son), Dernier, Bill Shannon, Phyllis Shannon and David Kaplan from CSN Chicago.
Bill Shannon could hardly believe his eyes when he opened the door at his Arizona residence March 21. "I thought it was someone kidding at first," he said. The Chicago Cubs season-ticket holder and Rockford resident, who watched Bob Dernier play centerfield from the bleachers back in 1984, was standing a mere two feet away from the former Gold Glove Award winner. Dernier's purpose was to gave Shannon a special delivery of this year's season tickets. "It was a real surprise," Shannon said. "My wife and I were just sitting there in the morning having coffee. When I opened the door, it was Bob Dernier, along with David Kaplan with his (Comcast) television crew and Brian Garza, who is the head of ticket operations for the Chicago Cubs. "After I didn't have a heart attack and caught my breath, I invited them in." Comcast Sports Net Chicago captured the moment in Arizona where the Cubs just wrapped up spring training. "I've been coming to spring training every year for 25 years," Shannon said. "One of the things I usually do when I get back to Rockford is to drive in to pick up my season tickets the week of the opener. "I won't have to pick up my season tickets now because they surprised me by delivering them to me." The Cubs are celebrating 100 years at Wrigley Field this season and season ticket holders receive a ticket package in a tin box. "That's something new this year," Shannon said. "The Cubs are really going all out because of their 100th year anniversary on April 23. Their usual package wasn't usual in any way. It's a gorgeous box." Each ticket has themed artwork inspired by 100 years worth of sports cards and Wrigley Field game programs. "It's a beautiful book," Shannon said. "And we have two of these because I have an account and so does my wife, Phyllis." Shannon said he usually asks the Cubs organization to hold off on sending his tickets because he doesn't want them transferred to Arizona while he may be commuting back to Rockford. "Somebody from the Cubs asked me if I was still in Arizona and if I was going to pick up my tickets," Shannon said. "I told them I wasn't going to leave until March 26. Then they asked me for my Arizona address and I gave it to them. "When they came to my door, that put the puzzle together, I guess." Shannon said this was the first time the Cubs had ever sent a former player to deliver season tickets to a fan. And the Cubs fan for more than 60 years enjoyed spending part of his day with Dernier, as the two reminisced about the 1984 season. "I told Dernier that I remember it so well," Shannon said. "He and Ryne Sandberg were referred to as the Daily Double and he got a kick out of that. He's a great guy and makes you feel right at home. "Of course, I was right at home." This was the latest of several fond memories for Shannon. He also threw out the first pitch in September of 2011 and in 2003 when the Cubs were five outs away from advancing to the World Series. "This moment here ranks right up there with the day I threw the first pitch," Shannon said. "That was a pretty exciting moment, and this was also an exciting moment." The City of Rockford's Community Development Department and its partner, HomeStart, have announced the startup of the Homebuyer Rehabilitation Assistance Program. This program will offer financial assistance to approximately 20 applicants to acquire and rehabilitate vacant properties in the City of Rockford. Eligible homebuyers will receive between $3,000 to $5,000 for down payment and closing cost assistance and up to $20,000 for rehabilitation of the property. Additional grant funds may be available from the City of Rockford through its Federal HOME Investment Partnerships. Only vacant single-family properties are eligible for the program. "This is a wonderful opportunity to encourage home ownership, rehabilitate some of Rockford's vacant homes, and create jobs for those in the construction trade," said Rockford Mayor Larry Morrissey (I).
