ANNOUNCING 'MOVE FOR HUNGER' Dickerson & Nieman, under the leadership of Realtor Lora Gilbert, is establishing a local Move for Hunger chapter. The mission of the group is to deliver unwanted, non perishable food items that relocating homeowners don't need to local food banks. D&N and Middleton Movers of Rockton will provide D&N clients with boxes, and will pick up donated goods for free. To kick off Move for Hunger, Dickerson & Nieman is holding a 500 lb. food fight on Saturday, November 15th. The goal is to raise $500 and 500 pounds of food to help fight hunger in our community. All donations will go to Rock River Valley Food Pantry. Food and monetary donations will be collected from 11 am to 3 pm at 6277 East Riverside Boulevard, across from Beef-A-Roo. Donations to the drive can also be made at the D&N office anytime before the event.

WHY VOLUNTEER? by Pam Clark Reidenbach Director, Northern Illinois Center for Nonprofit Excellence     The number one reason is that it supports critical work that only nonprofits can do. Nonprofits help keep communities connected, vibrant and healthy. We rely on them to help rebuild our neighborhoods, comfort us when we're ill and care for our children and elderly parents. Nonprofits have had a profound effect on my own life. They taught my son to play baseball, cared for my grandmother suffering from Alzheimer's disease and comforted my sister when she lost her husband to suicide. All of which is to say that nonprofits do more than serve the poor — they serve us all. And we need to do what we can to serve them back. Did you know that supporting nonprofits is also an important economic development issue? Indeed, nonprofits in Illinois employ more than four times as many workers as the food, textile and apparel manufacturing industry. That's about one and half times as many workers than either the finance & insurance industry or the construction industry. Nonprofits represent 10.6% of all Winnebago County paid workers. So supporting nonprofits is not only the right thing to do, it's vital to the health and economic well-being of our community. If you already donate your time to a nonprofit, thank you. If not, consider doing so! You'll be personally enriched by the experience — and will help enrich us all in the bargain.

AGENTS REAP PERSONAL REWARDS TOO Epilepsy Foundation: My niece has battled seizures since she became ill at 18 months old with no diagnosis to this day as to what actually happened. It has completely disabled her…she is now 14 years old. It is amazing everyone's story that leads them to who they are, not always knowing what they are dealing with at the time. - Christi Steines Rockton Lions Club: I love helping the community. I think if you don't get involved and help you have no business complaining. - John Peterson I have been blessed with a wonderful life in Rockford and always try to pay back and pay forward to this area I call home. It gives me great satisfaction knowing that my extra efforts can truly help so many people and needy causes. It gives me a good feeling of self worth. - John Howard Visiting Nurse Association/Money Management Bill Payer: I realized, as my own mother was aging, that some people that have always been capable of managing their own affairs may need help as they get older. Most of them have no one else to help make decisions and maneuver the different programs available to low income seniors. It's not only about managing their money. It's about helping them feel secure and taken care of. - Sandi Mosley

VOLUNTEERING HAS BUSINESS PAYOFFS What can volunteering do for you and for your business? Any time you're out in the community meeting new people and letting them know what you do, you increase your sphere of influence. I have had at least one sale as a direct result of our community garden and many others in my neighborhood identify me as a person who cares about people and is willing to help others. - Shelley Martin The people I volunteer with have sent me at least eight referrals. Plus a head of HR on the board with me has sent three referrals of engineers moving into the area. - Lora Gilbert It has helped my listening skills and given me compassion. - Sue Pehl Through my work with the Association I am in contact with a peer group that is on the cutting edge of real estate. This helps me to be always in front of new issues and trends in the market so I can better serve my clients and my brokerage. - Ryan Sullivan Taking on a volunteer role is much different than just participating in a group. You are able to establish yourself as an authority figure that people can turn to for advice and guidance. In hockey for example, if people are willing to trust you with their children, they can trust you with their house. You are not just telling people you have good character and ethics, you are showing it through how you interact with their children. - Derek Sheedy I have received many referrals over the years because of my involvement and therefore they trust me. - Lynn Hansel It helps me meet people and get referrals, but really it just helps put life in perspective. Life, including a real estate transaction is not about me, it's about helping others. I believe it has made me a better agent for that reason alone. - Jayne Ragan I meet a lot of residents of Rockford and many high-profile city employees. I have two listings right now and two sales this year directly from this volunteer position. - Vickie Krueger

I can confidently say that choosing to start my real estate career with Dickerson Nieman was the most important decision that I have made. When I made the decision that I wanted to work in the industry I did not discuss it with my family, my friends, or any of my peers. I wanted to consult a professional with my questions about getting into real estate. I decided to call Dickerson and Nieman. The Dickerson and Nieman staff directed me to what class I needed to take and explained the startup costs for real estate. The best suggestion that the staff gave me was to study in the office. From the first week of class through my final I made it my routine to spend a few hours in the office working on my classwork...
