PRINCIPAL OF THE DAY: FRANK WEHRSTEIN For years we've all witnessed the negativity surrounding Rockford's public schools. I decided to find out first hand-about the state of our schools by becoming Principal of the Day at Thompson Elementary School, just off Charles Street on Rockford's east side. I walked into a class of 14 to 16 kids, and found a teacher reading to them. They were listening more intently than my own kids do in Sunday School. The teacher had great command of the classroom. All the students were polite and wanted to chat with me, which was a bit of a surprise. Thompson is an older school, clean and tidy. The administration and staff were making do, and they were obviously engaged. But the kids impressed me most. They had the right attitude. They wanted to be there. The first step in teaching is instilling the idea of wanting to learn — and these kids had it. My experience was fantastic. I left feeling very positive about District 205 and its direction.

JARRETT: NO LIMIT TO WHAT WE CAN ACCOMPLISH Superintendent of Rockford Schools Ehren Jarrett is determined to make Rockford a Top 25 community — and statistics show he's making headway. - Student attendance is at 94%, even with the state average for the second year in a row - There has been a 66% reduction in zero-tolerance offenses since 2009 and the schools are at a 13-year low for arrests - The district's five-year graduation rate is up 5% - ACT scores rose from 17.8 in 2010 to 18.5 in 2015 (the number of students taking placement tests has more than doubled over that timeframe) - Students participating in athletics have risen more than 20% from under 4,000 students in middle school and high school sports in 2011 to more than 5,000 now - More than 2,000 course enrollments have been added in fine arts since the board added a seventh period "What we are doing is having a huge impact on outcomes," Jarrett recently told the Rockford Register Star. "I believe our pipeline can become a competitive advantage. If we figure this out — if we build a seamless pathway for children as they go through our system — there's no limit to what we can accomplish."
ROCKFORD LEADING THE WAY Beyond the $250 million investment in a 10-year facilities improvement plan, the Rockford School District is getting notices around the country for some pretty innovative programming. Academy Expo. More than 3,000 high school students from four school districts attended this regional career showcase. Students visit more than 150 booths to explore careers that interest them. Workplace Visits. Students as young as sophomores are applying their leaning via workplace visits. Seventy companies took part last year. College and Career Academies. These academies are helping students decide what they want from life and show them how to take steps to get it. Small learning environments coupled with exposure to real-life careers give students a sense for what they might do post-high school. Ford Next Generation Learning Model Community. Rockford recently won a national recognition for its forward-thinking career curriculum. The designation came with a $25,000 check to help further Rockford's academy model.
EVALUATING SCHOOLS: A BRIEF HOW-TO A variety of sources are available to help buyers to evaluate schools before they buy a home. Homes.com recently introduced "School Scores" to its web site and mobile app. It's a grade-based A+ to D ranking based on state test performance data from public schools. GreatSchools.org, U.S. News and World Report and school system web sites are also helpful. Realtors also encourage prospective homebuyers to visit school fairs and school open houses, read parent blogs and chat with parents at City Market and other community events to learn more about schools. Prospective home buyers can also tour neighborhood schools to help determine if they're a good fit. __________________
