If you prefer a more active adventure, you'll want to head out to the Pecatonica Prairie Path & Bike Trail. This multi-use trail is perfect for walking, biking, or even cross-country skiing. This is an excellent way to enjoy the stunning scenery in a safe and functional environment. The trail runs along the Pecatonica River and several streams. It will take you through farmlands, prairies, wetlands, woods, and scenic meadows.

The 12-acre Anderson Japanese Gardens is one of the best in all of North America. This award-winning landscape is incredible any time of the year. You'll love the winding paths, koi ponds, cascading waterfalls, gravel gardens, and more. To get the most out of your visit, schedule a docent-led garden tour and plant to enjoy breakfast or lunch at the "Fresco in the Garden" restaurant.
- Rock River Recreation Path: Rockford, IL 61101
The 10-mile Rock River Recreation Path was built as a community project in 1976. It's the perfect place to hop on your bicycle and take in the beauty of the season while enjoying the fresh fall air. The path starts at Davis Park in Downtown Rockford and ends in Loves Park. Once you reach the end, you can start your return trip, go on to explore the 3/4-mile path at Merchhealth Sportscore One, or keep going to Machesney Park and pick up Mauer Memorial Path.
- Forest Preserves of Winnebago County: 5500 Northrock Dr., Rockford, IL 61103
Winnebago County has 44 individual forest preserves spanning 11,503 acres. They're all dedicated to preserving the area's natural beauty. When visiting the preserves, you can enjoy camping, picnicking, bird watching, hiking, and more. Make sure you bring a camera. You'll be mesmerized by the lush woods, dramatic cliffs, picturesque streams, and the wide range of native wildlife. Once you visit for the first time, you'll want to return again and again.Â
