While our real estate agents know it can be daunting, we know a few projects that any homeowner can handle, especially on DIY Day.
Here are some basic DIY projects to consider for your home.
- Replace Your Old Floors with Luxury Plank Floors
If you're planning to add your home to the list of Rockford homes for sale, replacing your old floors with engineered luxury plank floors is an easy project with a lot of impact on your home's interior appearance. Floating vinyl planks are convenient because you can often install them directly on top of your old tile or vinyl floors.
Not feeling up to replacing all your home's flooring? Focus on replacing the kitchen, living room, and entryway floors, as families often spend the most time in these areas. Your new luxury plank floors will have specific installation instructions, but installation typically involves removing the baseboards, scoring the planks, so they fit the room, clicking the planks together, and reinstalling the baseboards.Â
- Paint Your Cabinets
Painting your cabinets is a simple, affordable way to update the entire look of your kitchen. Look for your perfect color in quality lacquer paint. You'll also need to invest in an oil-based primer; don't use a product that claims to be paint and primer in one. This isn't sufficient for painting cabinets, and your hard work won't last.
Plan on renting a paint sprayer if you don't own one, as it's necessary when using lacquer paint. Lacquer paint dries quickly, so you need to apply it at a rapid rate. Remove your hardware, drawers, and doors. Label them so you'll be able to put them back where they belong quickly.
Cover any areas you don't want to paint with plastic. Then, clean the cabinets using a degreaser. You'll then sand the cabinets with an orbital hand sander using 120 grit sandpaper. After sanding, prime the cabinets and allow them to dry for 24 hours. Buff the cabinets using 220 grit sandpaper, vacuum up any dust and apply the first coat of paint.
Once it's dry, buff the cabinets again with 600 grit sandpaper. Repeat until they're your desired shade. Let the drawers and doors dry for 24 hours before reinstalling them.

- Change Out Your Faucets
Updated faucet hardware has a big impact on the look of your kitchens and bathrooms. First, ensure that your new faucet has the same number of holes as your existing faucet. Use your water valve to turn off your water supply. Disconnect the water supply lines, and have a bucket on hand to catch any leftover water.
Grab a wrench and loosen the nuts holding the faucet in place. Place the new faucet according to the instructions, and don't forget to put the rubber gaskets in place. Feed the faucet lines through the existing holes and connect the water. Attach the faucet by tightening the washers and bolts. Once everything is in place, test it for leaks.Â
