- History of the Gardens
The Anderson Japanese Gardens first opened in 1978 after Rockford businessman John Anderson had just returned from a trip to Oregon. During this trip, he visited the stunning Portland Japanese Garden and walked away inspired. He wanted to create an equally beautiful space in his own town.
With this goal in mind, he transformed his own backyard and the local Spring Creek into a lovingly crafted Japanese paradise. To do this, he enlisted the help of Master Craftsman Hoichi Kurisu, a visionary who personally placed each feature in the gardens' sprawling landscape.Â
In 1998, the gardens were donated to the Rockford Rotary Charitable Organization and are now a supported non-profit. They are also part of NAJGA, the North American Japanese Garden Association.Â
- The Gardens Today
Recognized as one of the most beautiful and faithfully recreated Japanese gardens in the world, the Anderson Japanese Gardens receive more than 100,000 visitors each year.
The gardens are filled with immaculately kept plants, trees, and shrubs native to Japan. Around these elements, rocks, waterfalls, lanterns, and other decorative elements serve as striking accents. Every element of the gardens has been carefully placed to create a sublimely beautiful space. From the ponds brimming with brightly colored fish to the delicate pink rain of cherry blossom petals that falls every spring, you're sure to find something that takes your breath away.Â
The gardens are also equipped with an on-site restaurant, Fresco at the Gardens. This small eatery serves breakfast and lunch every day and offers catering, indoor and outdoor dining services, and even takeaway boxes for hungry guests eager to get back out on the garden paths. They serve a variety of Asian-inspired food as well as traditional brunch options like French toast, steak and eggs, and mimosas.
- Events and Attractions
The Anderson Japanese Gardens may be the perfect place for a beautiful walk, but that's not all you can do here.Â
If you're interested in the gardens' history and cultural significance, you can sign up for guided tours of the premises. These tours are led by a knowledgeable docent who can answer your questions as you walk along the paved paths. Visitors who take these tours also get exclusive access to the 16th-century Sukiya-style guest house, a stunning example of Japanese architecture that is well worth visiting.Â
Music lovers will enjoy the gardens' summer-long Tuesday Evening in the Garden event. At 5:45 pm every Tuesday during summer, a different musical group performs for the gardens' guests. This event features musicians from all over the country, so if you're planning to visit the garden soon, consider timing your visit to catch one of these live gigs.Â
For those with young children near our Rockford homes for sale, the garden also hosts Garden Explorers. This free summer program aimed at 4- to 6-year-olds meets at 9 am every Thursday until August 11. Each session begins with reading two children's books in the garden pavilion and is followed by a musical performance or an educational activity.Â
Finally, the garden pays tribute to its cultural roots by hosting an annual Japanese Summer Festival. This two-day event includes exhibits, performances, and activities meant to help further visitors' appreciation of Japanese culture. 2022's festival will be held on July 30-31.Â
