Pies may take center stage at Thanksgiving, but then it's time to move over and make room for cakes. Our real estate agents plan to celebrate National Cake Day on Sunday, November 26, with treats from these wonderful bakeries near Rockford homes for sale.
- Quixotic Bakery - 116 N. Madison St., Rockford, IL 61107
Quixotic Bakery takes its name from a word meaning "foolishly impractical," but its goals are grounded in the real world. The bakery's founders started with a mission to fund activities for a youth ministry. After selling their cakes at local markets, they opened their brick-and-mortar store in 2019. Quixotic Bakery even has tasty cupcakes for your precious pooch! Hours are 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday.
- Wonderland Sweets Bakery - 1408 N. Main St., Rockford, IL 61103
It's fitting that Wonderland Sweets Bakery is housed inside Rooted, a vintage home decor and gift shop. Ashley Villarreal started the business inside her own home, and now it's become a family affair as her husband and daughter have joined in. One of the more popular items is their charming lunchbox cakes, a mini-treat that originated in South Korea. Their menu also includes a selection of breakfast and lunch sandwiches. Wonderland Sweets Bakery is open 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
- Mary's Market Cafe & Bakery - 4431 E. State St., Rockford, IL 61108
Does your doctor frown on a steady diet of cake? Balance it out with some freshly made savory dishes from Mary's Market Cafe & Bakery. Items such as breakfast tacos, tomato-sweet potato soup, and chicken salad wrap are prepared with the highest-quality ingredients available. Afterward, enjoy one of their delicious baked goods made using Aunt Mary's 40-year-old recipes. Catering is available for your next office meeting or special event. Mary's Market is open from 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. daily except Sunday, when doors close at 3 p.m.Â
- Sugarjones - 6336 E. Riverside Blvd., Loves Park, IL 61111
Rockford gained their first dessert bakery when Kathryn Pomerene opened Sugarjones in a modest storefront. Kathryn's husband and mother pitched in to help her realize a lifelong dream, which turned out to be an overnight hit. In short order, Sugarjones outgrew the original location and moved to a larger space, not far from Loves Park homes for sale. While Sugarjones is known for delicious seasonal and everyday cupcakes, they also create amazing sheet cakes in churro, red velvet, vanilla raspberry, and other gourmet flavors. Hours are 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday.
- By the Dozen Bakery - 8324 N. 2nd St., Machesney Park, IL 61115
Four generations have operated family-owned By the Dozen Bakery, which was called Spudnut Donuts during their first incarnation in 1954. The 1994 move to the present location, just down the street from Machesney Park homes for sale, was accompanied by a name change to reflect their expanding selection of baked goods. In addition to traditional sheet and round cakes, By the Dozen Bakery offers specialty flavors of carrot, German chocolate, red velvet, black forest, and marzipan. Make your co-workers' day with a coffee cake in apple, cherry, raspberry cream cheese, and other mouthwatering flavors. By the Dozen Bakery is open from 6 a.m. - 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
