Anderson Japanese Gardens was inspired by Asian landscapes by way of the Pacific Northwest. After a visit to Portland Japanese Gardens in Oregon, local businessman John Anderson engaged Master Craftsman Hoichi Kurisu to convert his 12-acre backyard from a swamp to a stunning green space. After Anderson and wife Linda donated the Gardens to the Rockford Rotary Charitable Association, it became a non-profit facility open to the public for visits, classes, and special events. Hours are 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. weekends. Admission is $11-$15.
- Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens - 1354 N. 2nd St., Rockford, IL 61107
Take a trip to a tropical paradise without leaving the Midwest when you visit Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens. Founded by the Nicholas brothers in honor of parents William and Ruby, the beautiful facility has fulfilled their vision of a community gathering place. The 11,000-square-foot exhibition area includes a conservatory with a greenhouse, classrooms, and meeting rooms. Outside, stroll along the Eclipse Lagoon and explore the Sinnissippi Rose Garden, while the 10-mile Rock River Recreation Path leads to downtown's Davis Park in one direction and Machesney Park Mall in the other. The conservatory is open 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $5-$10. Outdoor gardens are open free of charge from 7 a.m. - 10 p.m. daily.
- Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden - 2715 S. Main St., Rockford, IL 61102
Another set of brothers planted the seeds that grew into Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden. In the mid-20th century, the Taylor brothers opened Rockford Nurseries, specializing in rare and unusual trees not generally found in this area. Enter the Klehm family, who purchased the nursery when the Taylors retired in 1968. Nearly two decades later, the nursery became the pet-friendly Arboretum & Botanic Garden as a tribute to Carl and Lois Klehm. Don't miss the Children's Garden, featuring an observation tower, play structures, a "splash pad," and covered gazebo for picnics. Hours are 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily, and admission is $4-$12.
- Severson Dells Nature Center - 8786 Montague Road, Rockford, IL 61102
In 1975, Fannie Severson donated her family's 369-acre farm to the Winnebago County Forest Preserve District so other families could share their delight in the land. Severson Dells Nature Center is anchored by a converted deer lodge that houses a library, bookstore, exhibit area, and a screened-in porch with a stone hearth. In addition to five miles of trails, visitors can enjoy the Grove Nature Playscape with interactive opportunities for fun and learning. Both the trails and Playscape are open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset with no entrance fee.
- Alpine Hills Adventure Park - 4402 Larson Ave., Rockford, IL 61108
Get some great physical activity in the lush natural surroundings of Alpine Hills Adventure Park. Trails are designed for mountain bikers, hikers, and runners at all levels of abilities as you take in scenic views of creeks, ponds, and greenery. Bring Fido and his leash along to share in your workout. Hours are daybreak - 10 p.m. daily with no entrance fee.
