Family-Friendly Summer Attractions Around Rockford | Dickerson & Nieman Realtors

Discovery Center Museum

Address: 711 N. Main St., Rockford, IL 61103

The Discovery Center Museum is an interactive museum where kids can create giant bubbles, navigate a two-story maze, dig for dinosaur fossils, and so much more. There are more than 300 exhibits within the museum, including a Baby Spot for children 18 months and younger.

The Discovery Center Museum is open daily from 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and admission is just $12 per person.

Burpee Museum of Natural History

Address: 737 N. Main St., Rockford, IL 61103

The Burpee Museum of Natural History is a great place for animal lovers. Visitors can see magnificent fossils, Jane, Burpee's famous tyrannosaur fossil, and even live animals, including crested geckos, blue-tongued skinks, and blood pythons.

The Burpee Museum of Natural History is also home to the Nature Nook, an outdoor space where you can see butterflies, native plants such as prairie grass, and water birds. Every Wednesday night, they present Music on the Rock, a live music series on the banks of the Rock River. Check out this year's lineup on their website.

Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens

If you're in the mood to spend time outside, plan a visit to the Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens. Through October 18, they have an exhibit called Botanical Curiosities: Carnivorous Plants & Other Herbaceous Oddities, which features:

  • Venus flytraps
  • Pitcher plants
  • Butterworts
  • Sundews

The Sinnissippi Rose Garden is another key attraction within the conservatory. It's more than 100 years old and is home to countless varieties of roses.

Anderson Japanese Gardens

Address: 318 Spring Creek Road, Rockford, IL 61107

Nestled on 12 acres, the Anderson Japanese Gardens are a serene place to relax and enjoy nature. Paths wind throughout the landscape, and there are several koi ponds where you can observe fish swimming and feeding peacefully. Fresco at the Garden, the on-site restaurant, serves breakfast and lunch daily.

Anderson Japanese Gardens is open daily from 9 a.m. onward. Weekday admission is $13 for adults and $11 for students and military members, with higher rates on weekends and holidays.

Rock Cut State Park

Address: 7223 W. Lane Road, Loves Park, IL 61111

Rock Cut State Park encompasses more than 3,254 acres of land, including Pierce Lake and Olson Lake. It's a lovely spot for fishing, hiking, or picnicking. The park is home to waterfowl, beavers, raccoons, foxes, and many other wildlife species.

Rock Cut State Park also has 23 miles of mountain biking trails, some of which are rated "easy" and are suitable for kids and beginners. There's even a concession stand along Pierce Lake.

West Rock Wake Park

Address: 1420 S. Pierpont Ave., Rockford, IL 61102

At West Rock Wake Park, people of all experience levels can enjoy wakeboarding. They have classes for beginner, intermediate, and advanced boarders. Families can even take lessons together.

West Rock Wake Park also offers summer camps for kids ages 7-15. The park has everything you need to board, including gear, water skis, life vests, and more. Reservations are required, so it's a good idea to check availability before planning your visit.
